Let me introduce myself

Norman Nelson smiling, wearing a bowler hat and glasses

For those who don’t know me, I am a gentleman-farmer (goats and chickens). In 2018 I moved from the Greater Vancouver area to Malakwa and fell in love with the area.

I came here to retire, and I found Malakwa had many places to put my skills to use. There was a need for snow plow operators, so I took a job with Emcon Road Services. And that was just the start…

So what have I been doing lately?

Some of you may remember me as the Deputy Chief of Malakwa Fire Department.

I am a volunteer driver for Eagle Valley Transport and a strong supporter of the Malakwa Thrift Store. Some of you may even have seen me volunteering at the Sicamous Legion doing Meat Draws.

While I was living on the coast, I worked as a project manager in construction and manufacturing for a total of 40 years, and held important positions in multiple charitable and volunteer organizations:

  • Deputy Director of Emergency Social Services
  • HAM radio operator with EmCom, the Emergency Communications branch of ESS
  • St. John Ambulance First Aid instructor
  • 1,700 volunteer hours with CDART (the Canadian Disaster Animal Rescue Team)

About Area E

The Columbia Shuswap Regional District Board consists of 12 Directors, one each from seven electoral areas. Electoral Area E is the rural area surrounding the District of Sicamous and includes the unincorporated areas of Swansea Point in the south and Malakwa to the east. Area: 1,621 km².

Malakwa is a community blessed with members both old and young.

Families are struggling – they need places to live and employment opportunities closer to home.

Historic fact: In the last election, only 366 people voted in Area E. That is less than half of the registered voters in the area.
Rhona Martin won by 4 votes.

YOUR VOTE MATTERS! There are currently just over 800 registered voters in Area E

Why I’m running

Area E deserves a future where families can thrive, businesses can grow, and residents have the freedom to shape their own land and community.

I’m running to bring:

  • Strong leadership
  • More local control
  • Real growth

I promise straight answers to your questions, open communication about meetings and gatherings, and to bring your voice to the CSRD, where it will be heard.

My commitment to Area E

Area E cannot grow without places for families to live and opportunities for people to work.

  • Support housing development

Residents should be able to use their land and build their future without constant obstacles.

  • Business development

An Industry Corridor along the highway that bisects Malakwa would boost the economy for Area E. My years of experience in construction and manufacturing will be a benefit in the planning of such an endeavour.

  • Revamp the OCP in Area E

From my perspective, the Official Community Plan has restricted growth, limited property rights, and added layers of red tape that don’t work for Area E.
    Read the Area E OCP.
